Abstract
Gholam Hossein Sa’edi’s short story “Tars va Larz” is one of the notable works of contemporary Iranian literature. Drawing on local cultural and social elements, the story vividly portrays the folk culture and beliefs of southern Iran. It reflects the social realities and living conditions of local communities while artistically exploring superstitions and popular beliefs and their psychological and behavioral effects on the characters. Given the coastal southern setting of the story, the sea plays a central role in many of the superstitions depicted. These beliefs arise largely from limited knowledge and are also connected to the simple and modest lifestyle of the region’s inhabitants. Using a descriptive analytical approach, this study demonstrates how Sa’edi employs these beliefs both as a form of social critique and as a means of portraying the psychological world of his characters.
