Fiction has a good capacity to explore psychological issues on individual and social levels. Considering this characteristic and ability, which seemed to be the case, the author analyzed five novels by Reza Baraheni: The Secrets of My Land, The Voice of the Slain, The Hellish Life of Mr. Ayaz, Azadeh Khanum and Her Author, and What Happened After the Wedding, by this contemporary writer, based on the theory of escape from freedom by Erich Fromm, a social psychoanalyst of the Frankfurt School. This analysis showed that in these works, some characters have the characteristics of Fromm's theory of escape from freedom. In The Secrets of My Land, Captain Shadan is a power-oriented (sadist and masochist) and a destructive character, Colonel Jazayeri is a power-oriented (masochist), Sudabeh Piroo and Houshang and Farzam are destructive. In "Avaz Kshetegan", the torture officers are authoritarian (sadistic), the father Esmaili is authoritarian (masochistic), the messenger, the doctor, the teacher, and the police officer Qasemi have a follower personality, Sultan Mahmud in the hellish days of Mr. Ayaz is authoritarian (sadistic) and destructive, Ayaz is authoritarian (sadistic) and the people have a follower personality, in "Azade Khanum and her writer Biboghli and Shadan are authoritarian (sadistic) and in "What happened after the wedding?" Birjandiyeh has a follower and destructive personality. The consequence of the existence of such characters in society is irreparable damage to the family and society, as well as helping to create a dictatorial and exploitative system in society.
