The short story Fear and Trembling by Gholam-Hossein Sa'edi is one of the outstanding works of contemporary Iranian literature. Drawing upon indigenous and social elements, the story vividly portrays the folk cultures and beliefs of the southern regions of Iran. It not only reflects the social realities and living conditions of the local people, but also artistically explores superstitions, popular beliefs, and their psychological and behavioral effects on the story’s characters. Given the story’s southern coastal setting, the sea features prominently in many of the superstitions portrayed. These beliefs stem from a lack of knowledge and awareness, and are also related to the simplicity and modest lifestyle of the region’s inhabitants. Adopting a descriptive-analytical approach, this study demonstrates how Sa'edi utilizes these beliefs as a means of social critique and as a tool to depict the mental landscape of his characters.
