Abstract
Language as a social institution is an important communication tool. Roman Jakobsen's theory of verbal communication is considered a coherent theory in linguistics and literary criticism, considering the main and secondary roles of language. Accordingly, the orientation of the message towards each role creates functions such as emotional, persuasive, literary, referential, metalinguistic, and empathy. These roles are effective in the poet's way of expressing himself and his view of the world. Using the achievements of linguistics and the poetic role of language, it is possible to examine Sohrab Sepehri's poetic dispositions. The present study analyzes the signs of language roles in Sepehri's poetry using a descriptive-analytical method and relying on Jakobsen's theory. With his own unique perspective and perspective based on rationality and awareness, ontological depth, creativity, subtlety of nature, and sense of naturalism, Sohrab has expressed the fundamental concepts of life in the form of concise sentences of command, prohibition, report, and reference in simple language in a series of dynamic and vivid images. The findings show that Sohrab has used all of Jakobsen's linguistic capacities. Considering characteristics such as being a painter, his travels, and experiences, the emotional, persuasive, and empathetic roles are more prominent with literary blending, and the referential and metalinguistic roles are next in order. Each of these roles has been effective in conveying the poet's message and influencing the audience
