This study adopts an ecocritical approach to examine the novel The symrgh pdar bzrg man bud by Fatemeh Sarmashqi, with the aim of analyzing the mechanisms through which environmental responsibility and contemporary—particularly adolescent—human engagement with nature are represented within its narrative structure. The research employs a descriptive–analytical method based on library research.
The findings indicate that the author, drawing upon mythological and mystical elements, portrays several distinct attitudes toward nature. These include: a traditional, nature-centered perspective (embodied by the grandfather), which emphasizes a lifeworldly bond and reverence for the natural environment; the narrator’s discourse, symbolizing a condition in which environmental education—if not grounded from its foundations—results in inadequate responsiveness to ecological concerns; a modern and conflicted perspective (represented by Sark), highlighting the crisis of choice and the necessity of behavioral change; the teacher’s approach to nature, which fails to internalize environmental ethics even among its own representatives; and an anthropocentric, ecologically hostile stance (embodied by Homa), reflecting a discourse of consumerism and indifference toward the environment. Notably, the teacher’s voice is heard less than that of any other character in a narrative with explicit pedagogical dimensions. This marginalization constitutes the author’s most significant critique of the formal educational system.
Narrative analysis further demonstrates that by foregrounding the consequences of ecological imbalance, the novel invites readers to ethical reconsideration and to the restoration of a reciprocal relationship with nature. As such, the work may serve as an effective instrument for enhancing environmental awareness, particularly among adolescents.
