Determining the literary movement affiliation of contemporary writers, especially those whose works lie on the boundary between several literary movements, is one of the important issues in contemporary literary research. Despite Ismail Zarei's significant position in contemporary fiction writing, the literary movement affiliation of his works has not yet been studied independently and systematically. The main problem of this research is to explain the literary movement affiliation of Zarei's stories and to examine their relationship with social realism and modern narrative. The present study, using a descriptive-analytical method and based on qualitative text analysis, has examined seven selected stories by Zarei, particularly the story "Jahannam" (Hell) of my own choosing, as the corpus of the research. The analysis of the works has been conducted based on components such as the representation of reality, narrative structure, characterization, language and style, symbolism, and the network of significations, utilizing the foundations of narratology and literary movement studies. The findings of the research show that Zarei's works, although in terms of representing social issues demonstrate the continuity of the tradition of social realism, in components such as narrative structure, temporal organization, characterization, language, symbolism, and the network of significations, approach modern narrative. The result of the research shows that his literary movement affiliation cannot be explained within the framework of a single literary movement, but rather it should be considered as the outcome of a gradual transition from social realism to modern narrative.
